Sierra Leone, Freetown: The Medical Superintendent, Dr. Mohamed Kamara, of the Rokupa Government hospital, east of Freetown, has over the weekend disclosed to Awoko newspaper that sixteen thousand, seven hundred and twenty-two (16,722) doses of vaccines were administered to the public, in the hospital between March and September 2021.
The records show that 4,634 People given first doses, while those given their second doses numbered 1,362. Some 670 Health workers were vaccinated, while other workers vaccinated were 4,011. The Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine administered were 3,974, and Sinopharm vaccine administered were 2,071.
Commenting on the turn-out, Dr. Mohamed Kamara said initially the turn-out was not that encouraging, but currently they are faced with challenges of providing adequate space to host more people entering the hospital for vaccination.
He explained that when “the first package of the Covid-19 vaccines (was) sent to the hospital, we experienced a huge turnout. But (during the) last phase of the supply, we experienced low turnout compared to the first phase.” He stated that the Covid-19 team including other health workers normally sensitize the public on the outskirts of the hospital in order for them to understand and be encouraged to take the Covid-19 vaccines.
Dr. Kamara added that as management they thought it fit initially, because of the huge turn-out, in the hospital, to relocate people coming for the vaccine to specific locations at the frontage of the hospital, in order to manage the limited space left. “Staff go out normally to educate the public or the people and for them to see the reasons, why it is necessary to take some doses of the vaccine brought to the hospital” said Dr. Kamara.
