African Athletes Poised to Shine at Paris Paralympics, Says AfPC President Samson Deen

Date:

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE — Samson Deen, President of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC), expressed strong optimism regarding the performance of African athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games, which commenced on August 28, 2024.

In his encouraging message, Deen highlighted that Africa is entering a pivotal moment in its Paralympic history. He described the Paralympics as a testament to the resilience, determination, and boundless potential of athletes with disabilities, noting that the Games are more than a competition—they are a celebration of human spirit and capability.

Deen emphasized that the Paris 2024 Paralympics represents a significant opportunity for African nations to build on previous successes and inspire a new generation of athletes and individuals living with disabilities across the continent.

“We are excited to witness the beginning of the much-anticipated Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with today’s opening ceremony,” Deen said. “Africa is well represented with over 45 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and hundreds of athletes across various sports, ready to make us proud on the global stage.”

He extended congratulations to all NPCs and athletes who successfully qualified for the Games, acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices involved in reaching this level of competition. Deen reflected on the performance of African athletes in previous Paralympic Games—London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020—where Africa secured 79 and 63 medals respectively. He expressed confidence that this year’s athletes will surpass previous achievements and continue to elevate Africa’s presence in the Paralympic arena.

Deen commended the athletes for their perseverance, self-motivation, and determination, despite the challenges they have faced. He encouraged them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence and to push beyond their limits in the Games.

“Your journey to this stage has not been without obstacles, but your spirit and commitment drive you towards success,” Deen said. “As you compete in Paris, remember that celebrations and rewards await those who shine brightly.”

The Paris Paralympics will run from August 28 to September 8, with over 1.75 million tickets already sold, underscoring the global enthusiasm for the Games.

President Deen’s message reflects the high hopes and expectations for African athletes as they strive to make a significant impact on the world stage. BT/30/8/2024
