Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a dramatic turn of events, relegation-threatened Wilberforce Strikers FC has managed to climb out of the relegation zone, thanks to the awarding of six points within a 24-hour period. The unexpected reprieve came after both Freetonians SLIFA and FC Kallon faced disciplinary actions for their respective transgressions.
During their match against Wilberforce Strikers FC, Freetonians SLIFA made the unfortunate error of fielding ineligible players, violating Rules 8(2) and 8(8) and rendering their players unqualified under Rule 11. Consequently, the match result between Wilberforce Strikers and Freetonians SLIFA, which took place on 8th July 2023, was declared void. The league’s disciplinary committee awarded Wilberforce Strikers three points and three goals.
Similarly, in the match against FC Kallon, the situation took an even more contentious turn. The match officials abandoned the game in the 86th minute, alleging that FC Kallon fans had physically assaulted the referee while celebrating a goal. The league’s disciplinary committee issued a notice for the remaining 12 minutes of the match to be played at a neutral venue on a designated date and behind closed doors.
However, FC Kallon failed to show up for the scheduled fixture at Attouga Field on Tuesday, 18th July. According to Article 24 (1) (g) of the Premier League Rules and Regulations, “A team that fails to report for or honor a match without just cause” shall be considered as having lost the match. Therefore, the committee awarded three points and three goals in favor of Wilberforce Strikers FC.
This unexpected turn of events has also impacted the individual performances of players. Top goal scorer Alie Conteh’s four goals from the FC Kallon vs. Wilberforce FC match were invalidated due to the match’s annulment. His goal tally, which stood at 23, has now been adjusted to 19.
The management and supporters of Wilberforce Strikers FC are undoubtedly elated with their sudden surge up the league standings. However, these events have raised concerns about adherence to league rules and fair play. The Premier League authorities are expected to reinforce regulations and ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future, promoting a more transparent and competitive football environment.
