We have questioned before and we will continue to question the road construction going on along Congo Cross and Wilkinson Road.
We have published the manner in which mid night blasting of rocks have gone on, along with the tearing down of fences without any notice to the owners of the property.
The point here is that all of this done with a particular arrogance which can only come from the knowledge that with the backing of the government no citizen can do anything.
It is this same arrogance which is being perpetrated on the roads by the way and manner signs are posted on the streets.
We must commend the CSE contractors who have gone to appreciable lengths to direct motorists and how to use the roads and also apologising for the inconvenience caused. This sadly is not the case with the Chinese contractors along Wilkinson road.
On Wilkinson road there are practically no signs to show which end to use, and when there are signs they are hardly sufficient.
Also important is that though the construction is not finished yet we believe that efforts should be made by the contractors to ease the strain motorists have to go through.
Again whereas road dividers are used along the Lumley junction stretch which is being done by CSE there is hardly any such effort demonstrated by the Chinese contractors. When one goes through Congo cross at night, there is no indication where the road divide is situated and motorists coming from the bridge struggle to keep on the right track and avoid riding into the divide. At least a marker should have been put there indicating the divide to guide motorists.
Of course the construction is not yet finished but the pot holes are even now quite evident and nothing is being done to cover them. Again there is no indication at Congo cross whether to use the one lane or continue with the out-going lane which leads to a dead end. Of course on Wilkinson road itself it is quite pathetic for drivers at night who struggle to find the correct path.
The question is why should we be treated like this? Is this not our hard earned taxes which is being utilised here? Why should foreign contractors treat us with such disdain and disregard? Does this help to instill any pride in us as Sierra Leoneans? Is all of this happening because our politicians have compromised themselves by demanding kick backs?
This is why we call for an investigation into these road constructions and a proper examination because for us they do not meet the minimum standards for which such money is being paid. Indeed we need more respect, this is our country and this is no donor money this is our money so we demand better service.
Better service indeed
