“Bring Home More Than Good Behavior – Win Us a Trophy!” Sports Minister Challenges Amputee Football Team

Date:

Freetown, Sierra Leone – In an inspiring visit that blended tough love with heartfelt support, Sports Minister Augusta James Teima issued a bold challenge to the national amputee football team: “Next time you represent Sierra Leone internationally, don’t just return with the best-behaved team award – bring home a trophy!”

The government’s top sports official made a special trip to the Government Rehabilitation Center on Aberdeen Road, where she witnessed firsthand the remarkable skills of athletes who have turned adversity into athletic excellence.

“Today I stand before living proof that there is always ability in disability,” Minister James Teima declared, visibly moved by the team’s demonstrations. “Your performances show talents that would put many able-bodied players to shame.”

The visit underscored Sierra Leone’s commitment to its “Radical Inclusion” policy:

  • No one left behind: Minister emphasized that disability doesn’t diminish citizenship
  • Government backing: Promise of increased support for training and resources
  • Personal connection: “Tomorrow, any of us could join your ranks – that’s why we must support you today”

Team President Aruna Thullah responded with gratitude: “When government leaders come to our pitch, it tells our players they’re seen as true national athletes, not just as disabled persons playing sport.”

While praising the team’s exemplary conduct at international tournaments, the Minister raised the bar:
“Good behavior makes us proud, but trophies make history. With your skill and determination, I know you can deliver both.”

Public Relations Officer Albert Manley Mustapha revealed how this vote of confidence has already boosted morale: “The Minister’s challenge has lit a fire in our squad. We’re training harder than ever to make Sierra Leone proud on the global stage.”

As the visit concluded, Program Coordinator Mambu K. Samai outlined the team’s needs – from specialized prosthetics to international friendlies – that could transform potential into podium finishes.

The Minister’s final words resonated long after she left: “You don’t just belong to this team – you belong to the nation. And this nation will stand behind you as you chase glory.” BT/3/4/2025
