Charles Mambu , chairman for Health for All Coalition, has been arrested by Police Officers at Mosensie checkpoint in the Bonthe District with a truck load of 274 cartoons of assorted drugs meant for the free health care initiative.
He was arrested alongside his monitoring officer Bockarie Ansumana and a driver Abdulai Sesay.
The three suspects were brought down to Freetown under Police escort and were detained for a night and released last Friday.
Police sources stated that the suspects alleged that the drugs were surplus and they were returning them to Freetown, but according to records these drugs were for Moyamba Government Hospital.
CID sources explained that information gathered indicated that the truck left to deliver drugs in Bonthe, Mattru Jong and other hospitals in the Southern region.
Also these cartoons has no inscription on them as it is the usual practice that indicate the District or Town where the drugs to be delivered.
The free health care was launched on the 49th Independence Anniversary of Sierra Leone by President Dr Ernest Koroma, for pregnant women, lactating mothers and Under Five children in his determination to reduce the rate of maternal and infant mortality.
Since then there have been hiccups on the distribution and availability of the drugs especially in the Provincial regions.
Recently, Police intercepted assorted drugs meant for Goderich when the vehicle was heading for Tokeh area. Investigation is still in progress.
