Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – ECOFEST 2024, one of Sierra Leone’s premier entertainment events, is poised to break new ground this year by showcasing both global and local talent. The festival promises to be a celebration of music, comedy, and culture, with top entertainers from across Africa set to perform, marking a significant milestone for Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry.

During a press briefing held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, former Chief Executive Officer of ECOFEST, Lawyer Abu Bakarr Kamara, affectionately known as ‘Kabaka,’ revealed that the event would feature entertainers from nine African countries. This year’s edition, dubbed the “Illumination Edition,” is aimed at shedding light on Sierra Leonean talent and placing it on a global stage. The festival will be broadcast across Africa and beyond through the DSTV platform, ensuring wide international exposure.

“The entertainment industry is a billion-dollar industry worldwide,” Kabaka emphasized. “Many people mistakenly associate entertainment with mere enjoyment, but in reality, it’s a powerful economic driver. Entertainment creates jobs for youth and people of all ages, while enjoyment alone doesn’t generate sustainable employment.”

Kabaka also highlighted that this year’s festival would not be limited to Sierra Leone, as organizers aim to broaden the scope of the event. “We shouldn’t restrict ourselves to hosting festivals only in places like Kallone Car Park,” he said. “Our vision is to aim higher, attracting foreign investors and tourists, while showcasing the incredible talents of our own artists.”

He pointed out the paradox that many Sierra Leoneans living abroad often pay large sums to watch Nigerian or Ghanaian artists perform, yet the same level of support is not extended to Sierra Leonean musicians, even though they are equally talented. “Why don’t we promote our own artists, who are doing just as well?” Kabaka asked, underscoring the need for a shift in mindset.

The former CEO also stressed the importance of collaboration between local and international artists. “Our poverty is not defined by our colour, but by our mindset,” he said. He explained that when KME artists traveled to Ghana to perform, it was at their own expense, simply to give Sierra Leonean talent international exposure.

“We have brought over 50 international artists to Sierra Leone in the past five years,” he continued. “Although they may not yet be household names globally, bringing them here to perform will attract foreign audiences who will also be introduced to Sierra Leonean artists. This creates an opportunity for our local artists to build international connections.”

Kabaka encouraged Sierra Leonean artists to embrace the opportunity to collaborate with international acts. “You should never be too proud to acknowledge that others may be bigger than you,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to create links with the foreign entertainers coming to perform this December.”

Among the international stars set to perform at ECOFEST 2024 are Nigerian musicians Chike and Ogechi Boys, Ghanaian artist Jackie, and popular comedians such as Brainjotter and Sabinus. These foreign entertainers will share the stage with top Sierra Leonean acts including Yeamata, Faculty, and Self Fie, making for a dynamic mix of talent and cultural exchange.

Kabaka also confirmed that entertainers from countries such as Togo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, South Africa, Gambia, Guinea, and Nigeria will join their Sierra Leonean counterparts in what promises to be an unforgettable festival. “My goal is to put everyone on the same level, showcasing the incredible talent of Sierra Leone alongside some of Africa’s best,” he stated.

As ECOFEST 2024 approaches, it is clear that this year’s edition will not only spotlight Sierra Leonean talent but also reinforce the country’s position as an emerging hub for entertainment in Africa. With a diverse lineup of artists and a focus on international collaboration, ECOFEST 2024 is set to make waves across the continent and beyond. AMK/23/11/2024
