Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – As part of efforts to promote a clean and safe working environment, the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) has undertaken a major cleaning exercise across its facilities in Freetown, following an administrative directive.

The initiative was led by the Director General of SLCS, Mr. Joseph J. Senessie, who joined officers and senior personnel in the clean-up operation. The event was marked by a thorough inspection of the prison barracks and surrounding areas.

Speaking during the exercise, DG Senessie emphasized that the clean-up was part of a broader effort to instill proper sanitation, ensure safe and dignified living conditions, and foster both mental and physical well-being among officers and residents.

“A clean environment not only improves health but also promotes a conducive atmosphere for work and community living,” he said.

Senessie described the initiative as both successful and multipurpose. In addition to the cleaning, the inspection sought to identify illegal activities, including unauthorized construction of makeshift and permanent structures, operation of unregistered businesses, and the presence of unauthorized garages within the barracks.

Reacting to what he observed, the Director General issued a firm directive, giving residents and officers a specific timeline to remove all illegal makeshift structures. He also ordered the immediate closure of all unlicensed garages in the affected areas.

Further administrative steps included summoning residents whose properties encroach on SLCS land and requesting the Director of Regional Services to carry out a business valuation of all enterprises—whether officer- or civilian-owned—within the barracks. This move, he said, was aimed at streamlining operations and ensuring accountability.

DG Senessie also mandated that all residential blocks in the barracks be uniformly painted in yellow and green, the official SLCS colours, to foster unity and institutional identity.

He concluded by expressing confidence that these measures would significantly contribute to the growth and transformation of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service. In a gesture of appreciation, he presented cash tokens to participating officers to assist with transportation. MJB/10/6/2025
