Customs impound container load of dollars

Date:

A 40ft container with registration number MSK96291/0 from the Port of Baltimore in the US was this week impounded by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) shortly after arriving at the Tincan Island Port in Nigeria.
According to the Nigerian Customs Authority, the 40ft container was stuffed with over 110,000 U.S. Dollars valued at about 17.23 Million Nigerian Naira.
Customs Area Comptroller, Tincan Island Port, Mr. Austine Warikoro, who displayed the container with the US Dollars while briefing the press, said such importation contravenes the Money Laundering Act of Nigeria.
According to him, the importers would be charged to court while all the contents would be forfeited to the Federal government.
The clearing agent, he noted, said the container was sub-let to him by the importer, adding that, both the importer and clearing agents will be prosecuted.
