Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – At a point in the history of evolving democracies, the inclusion and active participation of women, particularly during national elections is crucial.

Recognizing this need, the Eminent Women Peace Mediators Sierra Leone (EWPMSL), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Peace Building Fund, embraced the concept of an Elections Situation Room (ESR). This initiative provided women with a safe and Inclusive space to actively engage in election monitoring, advocacy and conflict resolution during and after the June 24th elections in the country.

The ESR fostered gender equality and amplified the voices of women during elections. By facilitating an inclusive space, the ESR ensured that the experiences and needs of diverse women especially during elections are heard, understood, and addressed effectively.

One of the central roles of the ESR was the monitoring of the elections. Equipped with a network of observers, the ESR provided real-time information on polling stations, potential acts of violence or intimidation, among others, against women. Hence, ensured a fair electoral process and safeguarded the rights and safety of women, especially in areas where they may be particularly vulnerable.

Backed up on the aforesaid, the ESR played a vital role in preventing and resolving conflicts that arise during and after the elections. With the use of their networks and mediation skills, the ESR facilitated dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful resolutions, enduring that post-election periods are characterized by stability, justice and inclusivity.

At the launching ceremony prior to the June 24th elections, the Deputy Resident Representative UNDP in Sierra Leone, Sayed Aqa Sahibzada, in his statement, pointed out that promoting the safety of female aspirants, women, and girls is key to promoting democracy in Sierra Leone, adding that they play a critical role in ensuring peace in the country.

“The ESR is timely particularly at this sensitive and tense climate we presently find ourselves,” said the President of 50/50 women’s group, Madam Fredline McCormack -Hale. Noting that the ESR has a history of working to calm electoral tensions, she said“Women have been actively participating in peacebuilding activities during and after the country’s civil war.” According to Madam McCormack -Hale, the ESR will not only increase women’s representation but will also reduce incidences of violence against women and girls.

At the event, several speakers including representative of  the Office of National Security (ONS), Mano River Youth Parliament, Market Women Association, youths and other women groups lamented on the importance of the ESR.

In her statement, Madam Haja Alarie Cole, spoke on the formation of EWPMSL, stressing that they have a vision to monitor, observe and diffuse all electoral conflicts. PSN/4/7/2023
