Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – Kambia District’s talented musician and self-proclaimed lyrical poet, Esko Rapel, has unveiled his latest song, “Bogoro-Bagara,” emphasizing the urgent need for youth awareness over idleness.
Recorded and produced by Unique Records, Esko’s new rhythmic melody sheds light on the struggles faced by Sierra Leonean youth, particularly as political loyalties and affiliations have often led many to a state of inactivity. Hailing from Madina town in Tonko Limba, Kambia District, Esko was named the 2022 Kambia District Star of the Decade by the Faces of the North Entertainment Awards (FaNEA).
In “Bogoro-Bagara,” Esko not only traces Sierra Leone’s political history but also sends powerful messages of hope to the nation’s youth. Explaining the title’s meaning, he describes “Bogoro-Bagara” as a common phrase reflecting frustration over unfortunate events. Esko expresses his sorrow over the country’s political landscape, which has been dominated for over six decades by the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition, the All People’s Congress (APC).
In his song, Esko critiques these political parties, referring to them as Alusine and Alhassan, and laments, “Every time I reflect, I feel our nation deserves better from its leaders. Among many issues, I am particularly concerned about the plight of our youth. They have been crucial in electing past and present officials but now find themselves among the most vulnerable in society. Many are unemployed, leading some to engage in harmful drugs, burglary, and other criminal activities that hinder both their progress and that of the country.”
Despite these challenges, Esko maintains a hopeful outlook, encouraging youth to take responsibility for their actions and contribute to Sierra Leone’s development. “I believe there is still hope for the youth if they become conscious of their choices and work towards positive change,” he stated in an interview with Awoko Newspaper.
With the release of “Bogoro-Bagara,” Esko Rapel joins the ranks of other Sierra Leonean artists such as Emerson Bockarie, Innocent, FSK, Deno Jay, Augustine JayTee, and Steady Bongo, all advocating for self-awareness and addressing the current state of the nation through their music. ARW/22/9/2024
