Kenema, July 5, 2025 – Over fifty students of the Eastern Technical University (ETU) in Sierra Leone have been rusticated for the remainder of the 2024/2025 academic year following their involvement in examination malpractice.
The disciplinary action, which was announced in a press release dated 2nd July 2025 and signed by the university’s Registrar, John Juana, stated that the students were found guilty of violating the institution’s strict examination protocols during the first semester exams.
According to the release, the university’s Disciplinary Committee conducted a thorough investigation before arriving at its decision. It noted that the students were engaged in various forms of academic dishonesty, all of which were in breach of the University’s Exam Policy and Code of Conduct.
The rustication, the statement added, is in line with Section 50, Subsections 1-5 of the Universities Act No. 5 of 2021. A total of sixty-four students were affected by the decision and will not be permitted to participate in any academic activities on campus until the 2025/2026 academic year.
However, even after their return, the affected students will be required to repeat the academic year in full, regardless of any previous progress.
Speaking on the issue, ETU’s Public Relations Officer, Augustine Amara Kanneh, emphasized that the university remains committed to upholding academic integrity. “This action is part of our broader mission to sanitize the educational system,” he said. “We want students to earn their grades through hard work and merit—not through dishonest means.”
The university has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice and continues to urge students to uphold the values of honesty, responsibility, and academic excellence. KK/5/7/2025
