DAKAR, (Xinhua) — France has transferred control of a fourth military site to Senegal, the French Embassy in Dakar has announced in a statement.
The statement said that on Tuesday, France officially handed over the Inter-Armed Transmission Station in Rufisque, located about 25 km southeast of Dakar, to the Senegalese authorities.
Operational since 1960, the site has played a crucial role as a communications hub for the southern Atlantic coast.
France initially established five military sites in Senegal. Prior to the latest handover, France had already transferred three facilities in Dakar during March and May.
The final remaining base used by French forces is scheduled to be returned to Senegal by the end of July, in line with the agreed timeline, according to the statement.
On Dec. 31, 2024, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye urged French forces to leave the country, while delivering his New Year’s address.
In recent years, several African nations, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Cote d’Ivoire, have urged the withdrawal of French troops and the handover of their military bases. Enditem
