Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The newly formed Lungi Tug of War team suffered a tough but spirited defeat at the hands of the more experienced Freetown side during the 2025 Inter-Community Tug of War competition held on Saturday, May 3rd, at the Deep Eye Water Playing Field.
In front of an energetic crowd, the Freetown team showcased their dominance and experience, overpowering the determined but inexperienced Lungi side. Despite putting up a brave fight, the Lungi team couldn’t match the strength and coordination of Freetown, whose lineup includes several members of the national team and athletes with over a year of training in the sport.
Coach Sonny Johnson of the Lungi team remained optimistic after the match. “This is a baby team,” he said, praising the players’ efforts and potential. “Losing to Freetown is nothing to be ashamed of. These boys are just starting, and they showed great promise today.”
Coach Johnson also revealed plans to expand the sport’s reach beyond urban centers. He intends to conduct coaching clinics in Lungi and introduce Tug of War into schools across the region. “We want to spread the sport to every corner of the country,” he emphasized.
Looking ahead, the Tug of War Association plans to organize a nationwide competition after the rainy season, bringing together teams from across Sierra Leone to promote grassroots participation and unearth new talent. BT/8/5/2025
