Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Sierra Leone’s tourism sector is set for a major boost following a high-level tourism dialogue hosted by the High Commission of India in Sierra Leone. The event, held on Thursday at Lagoonda Hotel in Freetown, brought together key players from the travel industry, investment bodies, and government agencies to explore opportunities for strengthening travel ties, attracting investments, and promoting sustainable tourism between the two nations.
The one-day forum served as a springboard for deeper collaboration, focusing on expanding bilateral travel links, improving hospitality services, and positioning Sierra Leone as a prime destination for global tourists.
In his keynote address, India’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Shri Baisnab Charan Pradhan, highlighted the economic benefits of a thriving tourism industry, describing it as one of the most labor-intensive sectors that creates jobs in hotels, restaurants, transportation, and cultural attractions.
“Strengthening collaboration between India and Sierra Leone in the tourism sector can unlock substantial economic opportunities for both countries,” he stated.
Discussions centered on strategic investment opportunities, including:
- Bilateral travel expansion through direct flights and improved visa facilitation.
- Joint ventures in eco-tourism and hospitality to capitalize on Sierra Leone’s natural beauty.
- Knowledge-sharing and training programs to elevate service standards.
- Public-private partnerships (PPPs) and franchise agreements with global hotel chains.
Sierra Leone, with its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and diverse eco-tourism sites, was showcased as a high-potential tourism investment hub. However, stakeholders emphasized the need for better infrastructure, enhanced hospitality services, and targeted marketing strategies to attract more international visitors.
India’s Mizoram state was presented as a model for sustainable tourism development, offering valuable insights into leveraging natural and cultural assets to drive economic growth.
To translate dialogue into tangible business opportunities, the Indian High Commission announced plans for follow-up engagements with investors, policymakers, and tourism stakeholders.
“Our aim is not just to have discussions but to transform them into real business ventures that boost economic growth in both nations,” said Neeraj Kumar Saini, Head of Chancery at the High Commission.
With growing interest from Indian businesses and a strong commitment from Sierra Leone’s tourism industry, this partnership is expected to drive foreign investments, create new jobs, and elevate Sierra Leone’s profile as a global tourist destination. SKS/28/3/2025
