John Konneh Appointed Head Coach of Mighty Blackpool Amid Relegation Battle

Date:

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE — In a bold move aimed at reviving their faltering Premier League campaign, Mighty Blackpool Football Club has appointed former Old Edwardians and Leone Stars assistant coach, John Dominic Konneh, as their new head coach.

The decision comes just a day after the club’s executive committee sacked head coach Tito Cole and his assistant Serry Turay following a string of poor performances that have left the team languishing in the relegation zone with only 11 matches remaining in the season.

In an official statement issued on Monday, the club cited a “thorough assessment” of the team’s declining form and morale as the basis for the sweeping changes.

“After careful deliberation, we have arrived at the difficult yet necessary decision to relieve Coach Tito Cole and Coach Serry Turay of their respective duties,” the statement read. “This resolution has been made in light of a series of disappointing results and a decline in team morale, which have demonstrated that the desired turnaround remains unattainable under the current leadership.”

While acknowledging the contributions of the outgoing coaching staff, the club emphasized the urgent need for new direction and leadership to safeguard its Premier League status.

Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Sahid Sankoh confirmed the appointment of Coach Konneh on Tuesday, stating that his mandate is clear: stabilize the team and ensure it avoids relegation.

“Coach Konneh has been appointed with the singular mission of securing Mighty Blackpool’s place in the Sierra Leone Premier League,” Sankoh said. “There is no room for distraction—we are focused on preserving the club’s top-flight status.”

Mighty Blackpool, one of Sierra Leone’s most historic and celebrated football clubs, is calling on its passionate fanbase to rally behind the team during this crucial period.

“This club holds a storied legacy in Sierra Leonean football,” the statement concluded. “We urge our loyal supporters to remain steadfast as we navigate these challenging times. Your dedication is the cornerstone of our resurgence.”

As the new coach takes charge, all eyes will be on John Konneh to see whether he can steer the Tis Tas Boys to safety and restore pride to the club’s legacy. BT/18/6/2025
