Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Kent Cricket Club (KCC) finds itself in the midst of a contentious situation, grappling with allegations of non-participation and involvement in illicit activities that have sent shockwaves through the Sierra Leone cricket community. However, the club vehemently denies these accusations and is now seeking clarification and reinstatement from Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL), formerly known as Sierra Leone Cricket Association.
The unfolding saga began during CSL’s Annual General Meeting on March 30, 2024, where Francis Trevor Samura, Chairman of the organization, reportedly accused Kent Cricket Club of expulsion due to non-participation and alleged illegal activities. Kent Cricket Club’s management has strongly contested these claims, demanding transparency and concrete evidence to support the allegations.
Management of KCC raised concerns about the lack of due process and fairness in the expulsion process, asserting that the club was not afforded the opportunity to defend itself against what they believe to be unfounded accusations. They also questioned the impartiality of CSL’s decision-making process, suggesting that their club was unfairly targeted while other non-participating clubs escaped similar penalties.
Kent Cricket Club, a registered entity in Sierra Leone boasting a dedicated Board and Management Team, cited governance issues within CSL as the primary reason for their non-participation. They highlighted a toxic environment within CSL, prompting their decision to refrain from participation until remedial actions were taken.
Furthermore, KCC’s management vehemently refuted baseless allegations made by Samura against Emmanuel Pessima, the esteemed Founder and former Chief Executive Officer of the club. They condemned these accusations as malicious and groundless, emphasizing Pessima’s significant contributions to cricket development in Sierra Leone and the unwavering support of the club towards him.
The club, renowned for its longstanding commitment to cricket development in Sierra Leone, is urging CSL to promptly reinstate its membership. Management has cautioned of potential escalation through official channels such as the National Sports Authority, Ministry of Sports, or legal avenues if the matter is not satisfactorily addressed.
