Port Loko, FREETOWN – Port Loko, a city traditionally known for its serene streets, rich cultural heritage, and a tight-knit community, is undergoing an exciting transformation this holiday season. Once considered a quieter, more subdued locale, the city has come alive with an energetic festive spirit, attracting both locals and visitors to a series of vibrant events that are redefining its character.

Historically, cooking outdoors has been rare in Port Loko, but this holiday season has witnessed a striking change, as the city becomes a lively hub of activity. The festive celebrations kicked off in grand style with the unveiling of the “Face of Legit” event at the S.L.R.A Compound. This special occasion, a collaborative effort between BSK Music, Fame Entertainment, and the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation, marked the beginning of a season filled with music, culture, and community pride.

The inaugural concert electrified Port Loko’s streets, featuring electrifying performances by artists like Jamaica Sul Cut, Menace De General, Famous, and Rahim De Wizard. Their lively sets resonated across the city, injecting a newfound sense of joy and togetherness into the air.

The excitement only grew as the city embraced Tangace, a series of events running from December 15 through to December 20. One of the major highlights of this period was the unforgettable performance by King Boss LA at the Port Loko Mini Stadium. Each evening, the stadium saw a swell of families—both young and old—gathering to revel in the music and the energy that filled the night. It was a celebration of local talent and the spirit of unity that made Port Loko’s festive season truly special.

Looking ahead, the buzz continues with the highly anticipated De Sorie Sulaiman Sesay End of Athletic Sports Meet, set for December 25 and 26 at the Ernest Bai Koroma University field. Four teams—Central (Blue), Sendugu (Yellow), Old Port Loko (White), and Gberay Junction (Orange)—will face off in a spirited athletic competition. The event promises to bring the community together in friendly rivalry, with residents donning team colours and cheering passionately for their local champions.

Another highlight for Port Loko’s youth is the Port Loko Rap Battle, an exciting initiative from The Young Shall Grow Social Club. This event, scheduled for later in December, will showcase the city’s vibrant rap scene, offering a platform for up-and-coming talent to compete in a creative and supportive environment.

The festivities will continue to crescendo with the One Family Sierra Leone Grand Launch & Dinner on December 29 at Texas Hall. This elegant gathering will bring together a diverse crowd from across the city and beyond, offering an evening of fine dining, entertainment, and connection.

As the year draws to a close, the Lantern Festival on December 31 will light up Port Loko’s skies in a stunning display of tradition and creativity. The city will come together in a magical evening, with brightly colored lanterns illuminating the night as residents bid farewell to 2024 and welcome the promise of a new year.

Port Loko, once known as a “dry ground” for its quiet, less eventful atmosphere, has been completely transformed this festive season. The streets are alive with activity, music, and laughter, as the city’s cultural spirit is given new life through these exciting events.

With each passing day, Port Loko proves that even the most tranquil places can burst with energy, joy, and community. The city’s residents can now look forward to more unforgettable moments as the festive season continues to unfold. AIM 21/12/2024
