Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – In a surprising twist at the Wusum Stadium over the weekend, bottom-placed Vem Buck FC earned a hard-fought point on the road after holding in-form Mena Queens to a goalless draw in Matchday 16 of the 2024/25 Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League (SLWPL).

Facing a daunting challenge against a Mena Queens side riding a four-match unbeaten streak, Vem Buck—who have endured a difficult season—displayed remarkable discipline and defensive grit. The result marks just their third draw of the campaign, but it may prove crucial in their desperate bid to avoid relegation.

The Makeni fans, who had turned out in numbers in hopes of witnessing their side’s first home victory under new head coach Hassan Malik “Zenette” Mansaray, were left frustrated as Mena Queens failed to capitalize on their territorial dominance. Despite multiple chances, the hosts were unable to breach the determined Vem Buck backline.

With only one win from 16 games, Vem Buck remains rooted to the bottom of the table in 12th place with six points. They continue to hold the league’s worst defensive record, having shipped 61 goals so far. Still, the clean sheet in Makeni offers a rare positive—and perhaps a psychological boost—as the team fights to stay in the top tier.

Mena Queens, meanwhile, stay fifth with 23 points, but the dropped points further dent their hopes of challenging leaders Mogbwemo Queens, who are now 20 points ahead.

Matchday 16 delivered plenty of action across the country. In a tense clash in Makeni, Rising Queens edged Ascentonians FC 3-2, a much-needed result in their own fight to climb the standings.

League leaders and defending champions Mogbwemo Queens cemented their dominance with an emphatic 4-2 away victory over FC Kallon, extending their lead at the summit to 43 points.

Malema Queens also impressed on the road, securing a narrow 1-0 win against Patricia Umu Strikers in Kambia.

However, not all matches ended smoothly—chaos marred the tie between Ram Kamara FC and Koya Queens, which was abandoned due to violence. The incident is under review by the SLFA disciplinary committee.

As the season intensifies, every point and every match matters—especially for clubs like Vem Buck, who are determined to defy the odds and retain their top-flight status. ARW/14/5/2025
