Sierra Leone Paralympian George Wyndham Competes in F57 Javelin at Paris Games

Date:

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – On August 31, 2024, George Wyndham, Sierra Leone’s sole representative at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, competed in the F57 Javelin throw event. Wyndham finished 11th out of 11 competitors, achieving a personal best throw of 15.07 meters.

In a standout performance, Uzbekistan’s Yorkinbek Odilov, born June 28, 2000, claimed the gold medal in the F57 Javelin throw with a remarkable distance of 50.32 meters, setting a new Area Record. Turkey’s Muhammet Khalvandi took second place with a season-best throw of 49.97 meters, while Brazil’s Cicero Valdiran Lins Nobre secured third with a throw of 49.46 meters.

Despite facing controversies regarding his disability classification—issues raised by the judges during the event—the jury of appeal ultimately dismissed the claims. Wyndham expressed pride in his participation and commitment to representing Sierra Leone, stating, “I am really proud to represent Sierra Leone. Despite the challenges with disability classification, it is an honour to compete in my third Paralympic Games and to represent my country with such pride.”

Wyndham also extended his gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone for their support and affirmed his determination to continue competing in international events. BT/3/9/2024
