Date:

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – As the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier unfolds in Lagos, Nigeria, young Sierra Leonean cricketers are making their mark, with several players in the race to win the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Among the 84 players competing from six nations, 95% of Sierra Leone’s U-19 squad are in strong contention for individual honors, despite the team’s overall struggles in the tournament.

According to the Cricket Sierra Leone media team, George Sesay currently leads the MVP rankings with a commanding 20.163 aggregate, edging out Namibia’s Francois Du Plessis, who sits in second place.

Other Sierra Leonean players making waves include:

  • Daniel Lassayo – ranked eighth
  • Skipper Raymond Coker – ranked thirteenth
  • Sahr Lebbie – ranked nineteenth, following an impressive batting display against Namibia

In the bowling department, George Sesay remains a dominant force, leading the tournament’s bowling chart with seven wickets in two innings and an impressive economy rate of 3.85.

Meanwhile, in the Best Fielder rankings, Ibrahim Sesay holds the second spot, trailing Tanzania’s Dylan Thakrar.

Despite the impressive individual performances, Sierra Leone has yet to register a win in the tournament, while Namibia leads the table with two victories. With their qualification hopes fading, Sierra Leone’s players are now focusing on securing individual awards to leave a lasting mark on the competition. BT/31/3/2025
