Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Sierra Leone’s lone Paralympian at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, George Wyndham, is set to compete in the Men’s Javelin Throw – F57 Final today, Saturday, August 31, 2024. The event will take place at 7:00 PM local time in Paris and 5:00 PM in Freetown.
Wyndham will be among ten athletes contending in the Men’s Javelin Throw – F57 category. With a personal best of 11.57 meters, he has secured his place in this prestigious competition after receiving a University Wild Card from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Since arriving in Paris, Wyndham has undergone rigorous training to prepare for today’s final. He expressed optimism about his performance, hoping to excel among the world’s top javelin throwers.
George Wyndham follows in the footsteps of Sorie Kamara, who was the first Sierra Leonean para-athlete to reach a final in a major competition, having competed in the long jump at the Paralympics in Japan.
The first weekend of the Paralympic Games (August 31 – September 1) will feature a packed schedule with 16 sports. Spectators can witness impressive performances in various venues, including the gardens of the Château de Versailles and Vaires sur Marne for rowing. The following weekend (September 7-8) will showcase para canoe events, and the streets of Paris will host the para-triathlon, beginning in the Seine River at the Pont d’Iéna bridge.
In Seine-Saint-Denis, Paralympic Road races will take place from September 4 to 7, delighting cycling enthusiasts with routes through the region. The closing weekend (September 7-8) will highlight para judo at the Champ de Mars arena and wheelchair fencing at the Grand Palais.
