Date:

Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The much-anticipated maiden edition of the Silma Cricket Premier League is set to spark a new era of cricket participation in Sierra Leone, according to Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) Board Chairman, Francis Trevor Samura. The tournament, which officially kicked off this Sunday at the Prince of Wales School Cricket Oval, is an exciting initiative aimed at increasing local engagement in the sport through an Asian-led effort.

At the opening ceremony, Samura emphasized the significance of the tournament, noting that it would not only raise the profile of cricket in Sierra Leone but also encourage greater investment from the Indian community in local cricket development. He assured the tournament organizers that the CSL Board would fully support events of this nature, recognizing their potential to shape the future of the sport.

“I am thrilled by the peaceful and positive atmosphere as we begin this inaugural tournament,” Samura said. “This is the kind of energy we want to see every year. This tournament is a great opportunity to inspire both players and fans, and we hope it continues to grow.”

The Silma Cricket Premier League features eight competitive teams and will run for five weeks, with 15 thrilling matches scheduled. While the majority of the participants are from the Indian community, the tournament is technically and logistically supported by Cricket Sierra Leone, ensuring that local players are fully involved in the action.

This landmark event promises to be a catalyst for the growth of cricket in Sierra Leone, as it creates new opportunities for players and fosters deeper connections between local and international cricket communities. As the tournament unfolds, it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the sport’s development in the country. BT/27/3/2025
