Freetown, July 21, 2023 – The Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL) is calling on commercial and semi-commercial farmers to consider sorghum plantations as part of its “local sourcing” initiative. During a press conference held at its headquarters in Wellington, Freetown, the company highlighted the advantages of sorghum cultivation for local farmers.
Foday Darboh, the Corporate Affairs Manager of Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, emphasized that farmers would benefit from engaging in sorghum plantations. To support this endeavour, the company has enlisted the expertise of an agronomist who will provide guidance and training to local farmers on the best practices for sorghum cultivation.
The agronomist’s role extends to advising farmers on proper storage techniques to prevent contamination and ensure the product passes quality tests. Additionally, they will offer insights into effective packaging methods.
In support of the local farming community, Darboh disclosed that the company has been providing cash advances to farmers involved in sorghum plantations. Seedlings are also offered to help farmers get started on their cultivation journey. Furthermore, SLBL facilitates the transportation of sorghum after harvesting, reducing logistical challenges for farmers.
Darboh further revealed that the company has increased the purchase cost of sorghum from Le 300,000 old Leones to Le 350,000 old Leones per 50kg. Despite these efforts, SLBL faces an ongoing challenge with the quantity of sorghum produced by farmers.
“Our biggest challenge is the inadequate supply of sorghum needed for our daily production,” Darboh stated. He explained that the company requires 1,500 tons of sorghum, while the current collective output from over 12,000 sorghum farmers across the country falls significantly short of this target.
In a passionate appeal to local farmers, Darboh urged them to consider venturing into sorghum plantations and selling their produce to the company. He emphasized that such collaboration would be mutually beneficial, providing both parties with opportunities for growth and prosperity.
By encouraging farmers to embrace sorghum cultivation, SL Brewery Ltd aims to strengthen the local agricultural industry and promote sustainable practices, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality sorghum for their operations. SKS/21/7/2023
