Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Sierra Leone Grammar School (SLGS) and the Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) joined forces to certify approximately 100 pupils who participated in the inaugural Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Holiday Club training. This free engagement, supported by SLGS and AWMS alumni in the United Kingdom, lasted for four weeks within the Sierra Leone Grammar School compound in Murray Town.
Mr. Bassie Bondeva Turay, one of the Program Coordinators, explained that out of over 200 applicants, 100 pupils from about 20 schools were selected to participate in this first edition of the STEM engagement. The participating schools included the Prince of Wales, Albert Academy, Sierra Leone Grammar School, Annie Walsh Memorial School, Freetown Secondary School for Girls, and the Lebanese School.
During the four-week program, pupils received instruction in four key areas: Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT), with one program taught each week. These programs covered graphic design, multimedia and photography, robotics, and coding. Mr. Turay emphasized the importance of technology in the current and future job market, especially with the government’s inclusion of STEM in the new school curriculum.
Reverend Cannon K. Davies, Principal of Sierra Leone Grammar School, praised the dedication of the pupils and facilitators, highlighting the positive interaction during the four weeks.
The Principal of the Annie Walsh Memorial School encouraged the pupils to take STEM seriously, emphasizing that it can enhance their careers. She noted that the training has helped pupils gain knowledge about ICT.
Mr. Desmond Macfoi, a Member of the STEM Committee at SLGS, called this initiative the starting point for the Grammar School to lead in STEM education. He urged pupils to consider STEM as part of their daily lives, highlighting its importance in the new school curriculum.
The STEM Committee’s efforts align with the government’s changes to the school curriculum, making STEM a major component. The program concluded with the distribution of certificates to participating pupils, facilitators, and supporting staff. The best two pupils from each program were presented with prizes.
