Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The newly elected executive of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) has announced the formation of four strategic committees aimed at enhancing the association’s governance, discipline, recognition, and editorial output.
In a move that underscores a commitment to reform and accountability, the executive appointed a Constitutional Review Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Awards Committee, and an Editorial Board, drawing from the association’s experienced and diverse membership.
Former SWASAL Vice President and legal practitioner, Mohamed L. Bah Esq, has been appointed Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee. He will be supported by Mohamed Fajah Barrie, a former SWASAL President and BBC stringer, who will serve as Vice Chairman. The committee’s mandate includes reviewing key sections of the SWASAL Constitution to ensure alignment with international standards, particularly the statutes of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).
Other members of the committee include Alhassan Idris Bangura, Emmanuel Y. Samura (North), Kalilu B. Mansaray (East), and Ishmael Saidu Kanu.
Veteran sports journalist and current Permanent Secretary, Kwame Yankson, will chair the Disciplinary Committee. Long-serving former SWASAL scribe, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, takes up the role of Vice Chairman. This committee is entrusted with upholding SWASAL’s Code of Ethics and addressing all matters relating to discipline within the association.
Other committee members include Donald Theo Harding, Mohamed Gassama (South), Adams L. Koroma (North), Desmond Kallon (East), and Francess Bernard.
The newly formed Awards Committee will be led by experienced journalist and entertainer Abu Bakarr Kanu, who is tasked with steering the selection and celebration of excellence within sports journalism. Committee members include Moses A. Kargbo, Alhaji K. Tarawallie, David Madi, Esther Pearce, Mohamed Abu Conteh, Mohamed Bashkay Sheriff, and Bernard Turay.
The Editorial Board is set to play a critical role in shaping SWASAL’s public engagement and media output. It will be headed by respected editor Sayoh Kamara, with support from a strong team comprising Moses A. Kargbo, Bernard Turay, Emmanuel Thorli, Alie Bittar, Alusine Rehme Wilson, Paul Kamara, and Barrie Alpha.
These appointments reflect the executive’s intent to rejuvenate the association and position it as a leading voice in the promotion of sports journalism in Sierra Leone and beyond. BT/8/5/2025
