Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – A night meant to celebrate Sierra Leonean music at Star Zero’s concert at the Radisson Blu Hotel has turned into a heated dispute between two of the country’s most prominent artists—Famous and Kao Denero.

Famous, whose real name is Alhaji Amadu Bah, claims he was the victim of a violent attack during the event, involving pepper spray allegedly deployed by individuals believed to be supporters of Ambassador Kao Denero, Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Entertainment and Investment. The incident, which has since been reported to the police, is currently under investigation.

Reacting to the allegations, Kao Denero took to his Facebook page, expressing frustration over what he described as persistent provocation from Famous.

“I tried my best not to make this a public issue, but I believe it has reached a point where I must speak,” Kao wrote. “Months ago, I was summoned to the CID over serious allegations made by Famous, including claims that I attacked him with a pistol.”

Kao further accused Famous of inciting drama on social media while hiding behind the law. “He teases and pretends to be a gangster, only to run to the authorities,” Kao stated, expressing disappointment in someone he once regarded as a colleague.

In a swift response, Famous also issued a statement on his social media platforms, addressing what he described as “egregious allegations” against him.

“To my fans, colleagues, friends, and the business community, I am compelled to speak out,” Famous began. “Following the unprovoked attack by violent ‘wannabe’ gangsters, I reported the incident to the Sierra Leone Police and sought legal counsel.”

Famous stressed that his team—including young dancers—were also victims of the assault. “These are boys and girls who should be encouraged to pursue their dreams in the creative industry, not left traumatized by such vile acts,” he said.

He also refuted claims that he was attempting to escalate tensions. “Despite my commitment to professionalism and the rule of law, I’ve been painted as an instigator,” he said. “How can I ignore what could have been a life-threatening attack?”

Famous further revealed that his legal team is in possession of CCTV footage, videos, and audio recordings as evidence. He maintained that his pursuit of justice is not driven by personal vendetta but by a desire to uphold decency and accountability in the entertainment industry.

“The attack has had a lasting impact on my team and me. It required medical attention abroad due to the potency of the pepper spray used. I am a human being before anything else, and this experience has been both physically and mentally distressing,” he said.

Concluding his statement, Famous reiterated his choice to seek redress through lawful means. “Those who know me understand I am capable of defending myself physically, but I choose the path of justice and peace.”

As the police continue their investigation, many within the entertainment industry and the wider public are watching closely, hoping the matter will be resolved without further escalation. MJB/24/5/2025
