Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, (ECSL) Mohamed Konneh has said that the Proportional Representation (PR) System will reduce tension in the upcoming elections.

Mr Konneh said this during the launch of the disinformation campaign by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) with support from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) at the Conference room of ECSL.

According to the Chairman, people are criticizing the PR system based on their disadvantage or understanding of the system, but such “System will help to reduce the tension around our election in June,” by creating what he called a rainbow city.

The system he said will give hosts of political parties across the country  the opportunity to be represented in Parliament, based on its unique formula.

It is a  system which is not new to Sierra Leone, as it was the system that was used in the 2022 elections.

The ECSL Boss said that they’re not going beyond their mandate but working in line with the laws that guide their activities as the Electoral Commission of the country.  He maintained that any thing they do is be informed by the electoral laws of Sierra Leone.

He ended up appealling to the media to help the Commission to spread the rightful message to the people of Sierra Leone, in order for us to have a peaceful, transparent and fair elections at the end of the day. MJB/29/3/2023
