Freetown, Sunday, July 6, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged unwavering support for Nigeria’s bid to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, affirming his administration’s commitment to using sports as a catalyst for unity, peace, and national development.
Speaking during the symbolic presentation of the King’s Baton Relay in Abuja—a ceremonial precursor to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow—the President, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, declared that Nigeria is not only gearing up to make a strong showing at the 2026 Games but is also formally preparing a bid to bring the historic 2030 edition home.
“The King’s Baton Relay is more than a ceremonial event—it represents a shared vision for peace, unity, and sustainable development through sports,” President Tinubu said. “As the Baton journeyed through our nation from June 27 to July 2, it symbolised Nigeria’s vibrant culture, our diversity, and the indomitable spirit of our people.”
He encouraged Nigerian athletes to remain focused, patriotic, and dedicated, reminding them that they carry the hopes and dreams of over 250 million citizens. “Our athletes have consistently brought honour and glory to the country on the global stage. We remain committed to supporting them and fostering a sporting culture that promotes excellence and national pride,” he added.
Highlighting Nigeria’s growing ambitions on the global sporting stage, the Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, officially revealed that the country is working towards submitting a formal bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games—marking 100 years since the inaugural event.
“Nigeria’s aspiration to host the Games is the result of long-term planning, strategic investments in sports infrastructure, and robust partnerships,” Dikko stated. “Subject to final presidential approval, we are preparing a comprehensive bid that reflects our readiness and capacity to deliver a world-class Games.”
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games—a milestone that would further cement the country’s role as a continental leader in sports and youth development.
The King’s Baton Relay, often compared to the Olympic Torch Relay, is a symbolic tradition that travels across all member nations ahead of the Games, fostering unity and anticipation among the Commonwealth family.
As the countdown to Glasgow 2026 begins, Nigeria’s eyes are also firmly set on 2030—a momentous opportunity to make history on home soil. BT/6/6/2025
