Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In Kabala, police have arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of a newly installed solar-powered traffic light. On Sunday, September 1, 2024, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) apprehended Joseph Fofanah and Alhaji Koroma, residents of Kodakayaka Street, during a raid led by Crime Officer Detective Inspector Sao Suma.
The arrests were facilitated by local community members, including prominent businessman Lamin Bangura, also known as ‘Lamtec.’ The suspects were reportedly caught red-handed attempting to steal a 12-volt solar battery from a five-meter solar pole on Kodakayaka Street. The community has expressed relief and satisfaction with the arrests, praising the police for their prompt action.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Detective Police Constable (D/PC-17682) Bangura M., known locally as ‘Sokoro.’ Kabala is the second township, following Freetown, to benefit from such a safety initiative. The solar-powered traffic lights were generously donated by a former local resident now residing in the United States.
Despite the positive impact of this development, some residents have attempted to steal the solar panels and batteries for personal gain. This led to heightened community concerns about the security of public property and safety, prompting the arrest of the suspects.
The CID of the Kabala Division is conducting a thorough investigation to restore public confidence in safety measures. Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ibrahim Barrie, the Local Unit Commander, has assured that all individuals involved will be held accountable for their actions. SKS/3/9/2024
