Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) has proudly announced its recent achievement of Permanent University Status, effective September 1, 2024, granted by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) of Sierra Leone. This significant milestone follows a successful re-accreditation process and highlights UNIMTECH’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and quality education.

In a public statement, Acting Vice-Chancellor & Principal Professor Osman Sankoh, affectionately known as Mallam O., expressed the university’s collective pride in attaining this prestigious status. He emphasized that the permanent accreditation is the result of years of dedicated effort and steadfast commitment from both past and present academic and administrative staff.

Professor Sankoh acknowledged the crucial contributions of key individuals in UNIMTECH’s journey. Special recognition was given to Professor Rosaline Uyanga, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Patrick Taylor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and the late Dr. Aly Turay, Registrar, for their exceptional leadership and vision.

The announcement also paid tribute to UNIMTECH’s Chancellor, Professor Paul Kamara, and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Paula Kamara. Their visionary leadership has been instrumental in transforming UNIMTECH from a modest computer training centre in 1991 into a fully accredited university offering a broad spectrum of programs that positively impact communities.

Additionally, profound gratitude was extended to Njala University for its invaluable guidance during UNIMTECH’s affiliation period. The autonomy gained in 2021 and this latest accreditation reaffirms UNIMTECH’s authority to offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, subject to TEC’s ongoing oversight.

UNIMTECH operates strategically located campuses across Sierra Leone, including the main campus at Kissy Dockyard in Freetown, and additional campuses in Bo, Kambia, Kono, and Lunsar. The university remains dedicated to providing quality tertiary education to disadvantaged populations at affordable costs, aligning with the government’s educational goals and the university’s motto: “For Country and For Humanity.”

The accreditation covers a diverse array of programs, including Bachelor’s Degrees in Public Administration, Social Sciences, Technology, and Applied Sciences, as well as Higher National Diplomas and Diplomas in specialized fields. These programs are designed to foster innovation and research, contributing significantly to the development of Sierra Leone and beyond.

Professor Sankoh extended heartfelt thanks to the Tertiary Education Commission, the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, and all education authorities. He also expressed deep appreciation to students, faculty, staff, and partners for their unwavering support, which has been pivotal in achieving this landmark accreditation. MJB/2/9/2024
