Makeni, July 5, 2025 – Women’s football in Africa is enjoying an unprecedented surge in global attention, with the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to reach millions of homes across over 120 countries for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Hosted in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2025, the tournament will be broadcast live in regions as far-flung as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, France, Germany, and Singapore—a monumental leap for African women’s football.
Leading broadcasters including beIN Sport, CANAL+, SuperSport, and numerous national networks across Africa have secured rights to air the matches. Moroccan state broadcaster SNRT/Arryadia will provide local coverage for fans in the host nation.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) described this development as a reflection of the sport’s growing momentum. With African stars like Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria, and Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji of Zambia shining on the international stage, the appetite for high-quality women’s football from Africa is greater than ever.
But the spotlight doesn’t stop at global broadcasts. CAF has also significantly increased the tournament’s prize money, doubling the winner’s share to $1 million as part of a new $3.475 million prize pool.
Here’s how the prize distribution breaks down:
- Champion: $1 million
- Runner-up: $500,000
- Third place: $350,000
- Fourth place: $200,000
- Quarter-finalists (each): $300,000
- Best third-placed team: $150,000
- Remaining group-stage teams (each): $125,000
This boost in both funding and exposure marks a milestone moment for women’s football in Africa. It not only underscores the growing respect and investment in the women’s game but also promises to inspire the next generation of female athletes across the continent.
As the countdown to kick-off begins, all eyes will be on Morocco—not just to witness who takes home the trophy, but to celebrate how far African women’s football has come. ARW/5/7/2025
