Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League faced a major disruption over the weekend as all matches scheduled for Week 17—set for Friday 16th and Saturday 17th May 2025—were officially boycotted. This action comes amid growing frustration among club owners over unfulfilled promises and lingering challenges affecting the league.
In a joint statement issued by the Club Owners’ body, it was confirmed that the boycott was a collective decision taken by all participating teams. The move, they say, is a direct response to persistent operational and welfare issues that continue to undermine the growth and sustainability of women’s football in the country.
“The strike action is not taken lightly,” the statement read. “It reflects deep-seated concerns that have gone unaddressed despite previous assurances. Our priority remains the welfare of our players and the long-term development of the women’s game in Sierra Leone.”
Club owners emphasized their willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with relevant authorities and stakeholders in a bid to resolve the impasse. They called for urgent and meaningful engagement to find a lasting solution that benefits the entire women’s football ecosystem.
While expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, the clubs extended heartfelt apologies to their loyal fans, sponsors, and stakeholders, thanking them for their patience, support, and continued understanding.
As the league stands at a crossroads, all eyes are now on the football authorities and the Ministry of Sports to step in and address the growing concerns threatening the progress of Women’s football in Sierra Leone. BT/21/5/2025
