Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – During a press briefing held on Tuesday, Youth Minister Mohamed Orman Bangura revealed plans for a groundbreaking collaboration with the World Bank aimed at evaluating the current state of youth affairs in Sierra Leone. The initiative, designed to bolster the ministry’s effectiveness nationwide, seeks to address a longstanding gap in understanding and addressing the needs of young people in the country.

Bangura emphasized the importance of this research endeavour, noting that despite the existence of the youth ministry for many years, there has been a glaring absence of comprehensive data on youth issues. The partnership with the World Bank represents a significant step towards rectifying this oversight and ensuring evidence-based policymaking in youth development.

Detailing the scope of the research project, Bangura outlined a comprehensive approach that will involve engaging various stakeholders across all districts of Sierra Leone. This inclusive strategy, he explained, will ensure that the voices and experiences of youth from diverse backgrounds are accurately captured and reflected in the final report. To facilitate this process, the ministry has enlisted the expertise of three international consultants and a local consortium, demonstrating a commitment to producing a thorough and credible assessment.

In addition to the research initiative, Bangura highlighted recent efforts to empower young people through targeted interventions. One notable initiative is the establishment of a one-stop shop youth intervention platform, which provides a centralized hub for accessing information and resources related to youth development. Leveraging the power of technology, this online platform aims to streamline access to vital services and support for youth across the country.

Addressing concerns raised about past youth development projects, Bangura assured the public of his ministry’s commitment to accountability and transparency. He acknowledged previous challenges, such as the disappearance of donated boats, and outlined concrete steps taken to rectify these issues. In a proactive move, the ministry has procured fifty locally-made fishing boats, which will soon be distributed to deserving youth beneficiaries. Additionally, plans are underway to provide four hundred tricycles, empowering young people to engage in sustainable livelihood activities and achieve self-reliance.

Overall, the partnership between the Youth Ministry and the World Bank represents a significant milestone in the quest to empower and uplift the youth of Sierra Leone. Through collaborative research and targeted interventions, the government aims to foster a supportive environment where young people can thrive and contribute positively to the nation’s development.
