Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, has officially welcomed 38 Sierra Leone Police (SLP) officers who recently completed a peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
A brief but meaningful welcome and debriefing ceremony was held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom to honour the officers’ return. IGP Sellu praised the team for their professionalism, courage, and dedication during their international deployment.
He emphasized that the successful completion of the mission not only reflects national pride but also enhances the global image of the Sierra Leone Police. “Your service in Somalia has added to our credibility as a professional law enforcement agency,” he remarked. “We thank God for your safe return, and we commend your contribution to global peace and security.”
The IGP used the opportunity to update the returning officers on ongoing institutional reforms, including the ongoing transformation of the SLP from a “Force” to a “Service.” He urged them to remain committed, humble, and prepared for future assignments. He also underscored the importance of maintaining ethical standards and professional integrity as they reintegrate into domestic policing.
In recognition of the officers’ sacrifices and personal commitments placed on hold during deployment, IGP Sellu announced a two-week leave period to allow them to rest and attend to personal matters. “We are giving you time to recuperate and catch up on your individual plans,” he stated.
On personnel development, the IGP disclosed that a survey is being conducted to evaluate staffing needs, particularly at the lower and middle management levels. He advised officers to remain flexible and open to future postings, reminding them, “Once a police officer, twice a civilian.”
The ceremony concluded with the formal handover of the officers to the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of Peacekeeping, John Fayiah Tumbay, for administrative processing before they resume their duties within the SLP.
The return of the officers marks yet another milestone in Sierra Leone’s contribution to global peacekeeping efforts, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation for international service. SKS/8/5/2025
