Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – A suspected burglar, Abdul Charles Sesay, has been remanded in custody after he was allegedly caught red-handed tampering with an electricity meter at a residence in Kamayama, Lumley.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Kakura at the Lumley Magistrate Court, facing two charges: burglary, contrary to Section 24 of the Larceny Act of 1916, and malicious damage, contrary to Section 51 of the Malicious Damage Act of 1861.

The charges stem from an incident on the night of April 9, 2025, at the home of Isatu Conteh on Big Mama Drive in Kamayama. According to the prosecution, Sesay unlawfully entered Conteh’s premises with intent to steal and maliciously damaged an electricity meter belonging to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), valued at NLe3,500.

In her testimony, Conteh, the first prosecution witness, told the court that she was at home with her mother when they heard a noise near the electricity meter at around 9:00 p.m. Upon inspection, they discovered that the meter’s cable had been tampered with and the meter card was lying on the ground. They raised an alarm and found the accused on the premises.

Sesay was reportedly held at the scene until the police arrived the following morning and took a statement from Conteh.

Given the nature of the offences, Magistrate Kakura denied bail and adjourned the matter to Monday, May 12, 2025, for further proceedings.

The case underscores growing concerns over burglary and vandalism in the Lumley area, particularly involving youth offenders. SKS/9/5/2025
