Teaching Service Commission popularizes Teacher Code of Conduct

The Ministry of Basic, Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) have put together a comprehensive Teacher Code of Conduct, which is being popularized, across the country.

The issue of a proper and improved code of conduct for Teachers and Heads of Schools in Sierra Leone has been a challenge for officials at the Ministry of Basic, Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and it is to deal with some of the many ugly practices by some teachers including school administrators.

The Public Relations Manager, TSC, Jamie Sankoh disclosed that the Commission in recent times now oversees all teacher matters as they relate to the teaching field, brought together brains of like minds to develop a comprehensive code of conduct for teachers to guide against the many ugly practices and provide a pathway to decent and professional behavior of teachers and Heads of Schools. “In the Western Area, 856 Male and 400 Female teachers totaling 1,256 signed up for the code of conduct, bringing the total number of teachers who have signed up for this document in the Western Area to 2,275, with 1,994 male and 581 females”. She added that the activity was organized by the TSC in collaboration with MBSSE, Teachers and School Leaders, School Support Officers and Leh Wi Lan education project.

Jamie Sankoh said the exercise is expected to enhance compliance with the code of conduct by teachers, promote effective service delivery to further improve the quality of education in the country.
